New York In The Mornings…

Ok, I know this is over a year late, but I simply LOVE this version of this song. I think the reason this was brought to my attention is the release of the soundtrack for Sex and the City 2. There are certain songs that capture the feel of a time or place. This version makes me think of driving through NYC very very early in the morning. In the late 90s, I visited the city and I got up around 5 am to walk around and there was very little traffic or people on the street. The air was crisp and the sun came up bringing new life to the city. I loved NYC at that moment. The window for that moment is so small, but I think it’s captured in this song. I can close my eyes and listen to this and be taken right back to that moment where I felt alone in a city of millions.

There’s also another song in this same vein… You won’t like this, but it’s from Village People. Yes, THE Village People. It’s after the disco craze. I have to set up this for you, first, though. In the early 80’s, the Village People manager wanted to update their style to match the New Romantic movement. So, they went for Renaissance costumes and weird hair and make-up. It obviously didn’t work as they were labeled Disco Queens. In fact, the name of the album was Renaissance. There were several songs about food which instantly made this a comedy album, but you have to remember that everyone was dieting to remain thin. You could not be overweight in the 80’s. Anyway, this song is called 5 O’Clock In The Morning and it’s actually about being in the city at an early time and I think the music and the feel of the song is a perfect match for the subject. The chorus gets a little off, but the verse is perfect! This one seems more late night before bed than early morning riser.

Are there other songs I have missed that match that early morning NYC feel? I’d love to hear them!

Donkey Kong Solitare-My Own Invention

In the 80’s, I came up with a version of solitare that had a Donkey Kong theme.

Here’s how you play:

2 levels of difficulty:

2 Decks of cards (EASY)
1 Deck of cards (DIFFICULT)

(with or without jokers)

Shuffle, place four cards face-up across the table directly in front of you. Place a fifth card at the end of the row, but higher up. Let’s see if I can draw it out…

–>

Start the next row of four going backwards from that fifth card.

<–

At the end of that fourth card, put one down a little higher, then four to the right, one higher, etc. until you have 5 rows of cards.

Put one extra out to the side, face up (as all the other ones were)-that’s Donkey Kong. Then put one beside him FACE DOWN-that’s the Princess/Girl/Guy/Whatever you’re trying to save. If you beat Dk, then you can turn over the Princess and see how many points you got for that game.

So, the object is to “climb” to the top. You do this by:

Taking the top card from the pile you have left. Start at your bottom left and compare it to the first card. If your card is higher, then move to the next card, if it’s higher, continue on, when you get to the fifth card, you start heading back the other way. If your card is LOWER OR THE SAME, then you put your lower card over(on top of) the higher card and then get the next card from the deck and start over at the bottom.

If you pull a joker, that’s 100 extra points if you complete the game. Put those cards face up on the side.

If there’s a joker on the “board”, then that’s a free space-any card can go past. An Ace counts as a “1”.

If you get to the top, and put a card on top of Donkey Kong, you have won. Turn the face-down card over and multiply it times 100. (example: 5×100=500 Qx100=1000 Ax100=100) Add up how many jokers and multiply times 100 and add to your score.

OpenOffice.org FREE MS office replacement software thoughts

I play cards with a couple of people and have used Microsoft Excel to keep score. (After programming it) This time, I was using a different machine that didn’t have MS Office on it, so I needed a spreadsheet program. I remembered OpenOffice.org supposedly being compatible with Office, so I decided to try it out. The download took a couple of minutes and the install about a minute. (I only installed Calc (spreadsheets) and the word processor.) I started Calc and it looked very similar to Excel. I started creating the function to add up the columns and within a minute had it done.

I haven’t tried the word processor, yet, but will let you know how that is as well. But it looks like Word 2003.

If you’re not doing intense stuff and need something for home, this is the way to go.

I would suggest this for people who don’t want to shell out the cash for Office (even though I am a MS fan!). I have a legit copy of office 2003, so I use that to this day and don’t plan on upgrading. If it’s not broken….

How to play PACARDY with a regular deck of cards

I bought a card game years ago called Pacardy. It came with fake coins, but we always used real money. I lost the cards in a move, so I tried to figure out how to play it with a regular deck and came up with this.
The object:
Roll the dice to get rid of the matching cards in your hand.

1 Deck of playing cards

$1.25 playing money for each:
3 quarters
3 dimes
3 nickels
5 pennies
(usually works best)

Pair of 6 sided dice

If you have 4 players, take out 2 of the 7’s. (Doesn’t matter which 2)
If 3 players, leave all 54 cards (deck+2 jokers).

Roll dice to see who deals.
Deal ALL the cards.
Person to left of dealer starts game.

Player rolls dice.
If the player has that number in his hand (2-6,8-10, J(11), Q(12)), they may throw down that one card. The player gets to roll until he rolls a 7.

If player rolls a 7, then everyone at the table has to pay and the next player starts his turn.

The pay goes as follows:
The first time a 7 comes up, everyone puts in 1 penny. The second time, 2 pennies, third, 3. This continues until 7 pennies, then, from every payup after that, it’s 7 cents.
If you have an Ace, King, Joker or 7 in your hand, you may use that in place of your pay until you run out of those cards. Then, you MUST use money. If you run out of money, you have lost.

If you roll the last card in your hand, no matter what it is, you have won.

Notes:
2’s and Q’s are the hardest cards to get rid of. (snake eyes and double 6’s on the dice)

Steven M. Johnson’s (Once) Crazy Inventions

I say “once” because back in 1984, when his book was published, the things looked pretty outlandish. Now, some of these things have become part of our lives. All of them are funny. (And some of the ties I want!) I can identify with his ideas, since I have been called crazy in reference to some of mine. (See tapeworm clinic LOL)

Governor’s Island NYC…

Governor’s Island right off the coast of lower Manhattan has always fascinated me. From what I heard, the military was stationed on this island and it housed soldiers only. So the whole island was a base. A few years back, they moved off the island and it has been empty ever since. I heard that Donald Trump was going to put a resort/casino on there, but then it fell through. Then I heard that the federal government sold the island to New York State for $1.

I think a piece of Vegas in NYC would be nice. Maybe a theme park. Maybe a retirement island. Any other ideas?

Trying My Hand At Sculpture…

I decided to try my hand at sculpture. (No pun intended!) Here’s my first piece. The only problem is that I bought clay that never hardens, so I am not sure if I am going to keep this one. I have a plan for this skill, so check back in the future to see if I have been able to harness this!
