Betty White – Life With Elizabeth

I bought a set of movies from WalMart called “Lucy & Betty – TV’s Comedy Queens”. It’s a set of discs spotlighting Lucille Ball and Betty White’s lesser know stuff. I like Lucy, but I was a big fan of the Golden Girls. Since I hadn’t seen anything before Mary Tyler Moore’s collaboration with Betty, I decided to check this out. $10 for a number of discs. Not bad.

I started watching the episodes of Life With Elizabeth with the mindset that it was 1950-something. The writing was dry, and over a few episodes, Elizabeth turned into a ditz. I am a big fan of subtle breaking of the fourth wall, but this was a little much. Here’s the format:

A guy comes up on screen and says “Incident number one in the Life of Elizabeth…” and gives you a teaser of what’s to come. He stammers, then says something to the effect of “let’s have a look”. Now, mind you, the incidents are not in any kind of order, as sometimes they go back in time. So already the incident numbering is “off”. There are three “incidents” per episode.

When they cut to the scene with Elizabeth, the announcer asks her questions and she can’t speak. Odd. She mimes what’s happening. At some point, the announcer asks Elizabeth if she’s ashamed of what she’s done, and she shakes her head. Then, at the end of the episode, all the people in the room are arguing and the announcer cuts in and makes them say goodbye to the audience. Ok, fourth wall be damned!

I love it when cartoons reference the fourth wall without breaking it, as in Squidward saying, “every 11 minutes of my life…”, which actually goes back to Ren & Stimpy referencing the same time period.

So, to give this a review, I would have to rate it based on standards in 1953. It’s ok. How’s that for a rating?

American Horror Story – Asylum

I very rarely watch continuing television shows, but last year, one caught my eye. American Horror Story. I tend to like the “unusual” and it looked unusual. I watched one episode and was hooked. Too bad at the end of the season it took a typical “everybody dies” turn. I wondered aloud how on earth they could have a season two.

Seeing the previews for season two, I could have sworn that the creators looked in my head. Abandoned insane asylum, nuns, general weirdness… Couldn’t wait!

The first episode was great. Jessica Langue is superb in this role, and in an interesting continuation- she is the operator of an insane asylum – from the last season as the mother of a child with down syndrome. I find the writing for her character amazing. You wonder if she is delusional in thinking she’s doing the right thing, or if she is actually evil and extremely manipulative.

I am also loving the re-use of the actors. This is what theater(tv) is all about. The acting. So, check out American Horror Story – Asylum on Wednesday nights at 10pm.

In an off-topic suggestion:
One thing I would like to say is that instead of seeing a movie based on who is in it, you should see movies based on the story. Check out independent films that don’t have disney-esque endings. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind should be your first start.

The Lorax – Review – 1 Star

I would like to think of myself as quite open minded when it comes to cartoons. I grew up reading Dr. Suess books and liked the “out there” style. I wanted to see the Lorax in 3D at the movies, but I have been so disappointed with movies that I rarely go to the theater to see them. I decided to wait until it came out on 3D Blu-Ray so I could watch it in comfort.
I started it and immediately liked the visuals and the 3D was really nice. About 10 minutes in, though, I had already paused it. Bad sign.
It was very slow moving and the “evil” character was difficult to look at. Not because of an emotional response, but one of “What were they thinking?” I think I paused the movie about 4 times in total just to get through it.
The musical numbers were very numbing and I think I might have chuckled twice. Danny Devito as the Lorax’s voice was a choice based on height. Weird. It was difficult to feel pity for him with this voice.
If this was on television and you needed something to go to sleep to, I would say watch it. Otherwise, don’t bother.

To stimulate the economy and make web browsing safer

I propose a change in the way businesses do business on the net. In every “real” business, you must have a license and able to be tracked. This is not to watch the company, but to protect consumers. The internet should not be any different. Anyone who has been online and shopped has run across a bad deal or company that takes your money and disappears.
My proposal is to take away “.com” domain names away from anyone who doesn’t have a business license. No whois information should be allowed to be hidden. .com companies should only be u.s. companies. Each country has their own version of “.com”. (co.uk,etc)
Yes, I realize that this would also take away my own domain name, but the greater good is to not allow companies to be anonymous and other countries to prey upon american users.

Samsung Galaxy Note

I have been toying with the idea of replacing my phone with a Samsung Galaxy Note for a few months. I had actually ordered similar things from China a couple of years ago and found that they were totally unusable. The Galaxy Note is what’s considered a “Phablet” (phone/tablet). I currently have an HTC HD2 that I converted to android a year or so ago. So, I am used to people joking about my large phone. (I actually show them the screen and they end up loving it.)  The HTC screen is 4.3 inches. The Samsung Galaxy Note is 5.3 inches. So, I am just going up an inch.

I did a lot of looking around online, since the price was going to end up being around $700 for the phablet. Ebay was my first choice because of paypal/billmelater, but I wanted to get a drops and spills warranty for such an expensive item and squaretrade no longer does that for an ebay purchase. So, I searched for a while, at&t wanted $650 online, but no unlocked option. I actually found it on walmart’s site, unlocked, for $750 and wrote to them asking why it was $100 more than everywhere else. They wrote back, surprisingly, and said that they try to be competitive, but they were sure of the price.

I gave up on getting the Galaxy Note and tried a Blu Studio 5.3, from a seller on ebay. Two days after using the phone, a red line showed up in the display. I considered that a sign and returned it. Even though the price was a third of the Galaxy Note, the quality was not good. The seller was excellent, btw, about taking the item back and giving me a refund. What I weighed out was a third of the price and having to replace it at some point within a year would not be cool. So, that kicked me back into keeping an eye on the Galaxy Note.

While strolling through the Note listings the other day, I found that walmart had actually taken the price down $100 and immediately placed it in my cart! Looks like someone paid attention to my email! I checked out quickly and waited for my shipment to arrive.

While waiting, I looked around for a case. These are hard to find in this country right now. I don’t want the one that attaches to the back, as I read that it can easily come off and the battery falls out. I don’t want the ones with the buttoning flap out to the side, so I did some heavy searching on ebay for the exact cover I am looking for. I found it, it’s called MFIT, and it is a book-type cover without a buttoning flap and latches with a magnet. PERFECT! Only problem is, it’s $50 and it comes from Korea and they state it will be a month before it gets here. As I type this, I have decided to go ahead and order it and try to find something cheap in the meantime.

UPDATE:

I got the phone, bought the drops and spills warranty as well. I got the case as well. I have been using it now for a couple of weeks and absolutely love it. The first reaction I get from people is “That’s HUGE!”, then they want to see it. I even had a waiter so interested in it, he spilled things. Once I show them the included video, the web browser, and the PEN feature, they want one. Until they learn the price. 🙂

Blu Studio 5.3 Phone

UPDATE:

I should have trusted my instincts about something “designed” in Miami… After 2 days, there is a red line running through the display. Sigh….. Sending the phone back and will take the plunge for the galaxy note.

—–

After a couple of dud phone/tablets that I purchased from China a couple of years ago, I had given up on finding a PHABLET (phone/tablet) that was any good. I knew why. iPhone and iPad don’t want to consolidate the two because it cuts their profits in half. Other companies do the same thing.

Then, late last year, I saw an ad for the new Samsung Galaxy Note. When checking the prices for the import versions, they were around $600. I hesitated.

Then, this year, they introduced the domestic version and I wanted it. BAD.

Still, the unlocked price was around $700. I couldn’t justify that.

So, while reading reviews for the Samsung Note, I saw a reference to the Blu Studio 5.3.

I read up on it a bit, looked at some unboxing on YouTube, and it looked ok. The specs held me off for a while, until I completely decided that I refuse to pay $700 for a phone.

If you’ve read my blog, you will see that I am all for buying American Made products. I am not sure if it’s true or not, but this Blu Studio says it’s “designed” in Miami, and assembled in China!

Even though Miami County is a third world country, I went for it.

I ordered it from a retailer on ebay that was in New York. Why, you ask? Free shipping and NO sales tax. Also, this particular company seemed like they were very concerned about their customer service. Ebay/Paypal. If the phone was crap, I could probably get my money back.

When I got the phone, and pulled it out of the box, it was HUGE! 5.3 inch screen. “Huge” means fantastic in my book.

I started it up and the screen is just as good as the Galaxy Note. It’s just a tad bit thicker, but there’s one plus-dual SIM cards! You can have your data plan on one service and voice on another, or if you carry a work phone and a personal phone, you can combine it.

Put the SIM card in and a microsd card and it was good to go.

The manual only tells you how to do things in the android OS, so I think I am going to try to put together some instructions here.

To remove the back, if the phone’s screen is facing you, at the top right corner on the edge, there is a notch. The back pops right off. The SIM card goes in with the metal parts facing down under the sticker that says 2g/3g. The notched side of your card goes to the right.

I will continue to update this with things about the phone and other how-to’s. If anyone already has one of these and has rooted it, please email and give me the instructions. I will post them here. I attempted sup3r0necl1ck, but my virus protection said there was a malicious item, so I didn’t try it.

LOVE this phone so far!

Haven’t tried this yet, but good to know:

“to enter in Recovery mode just plug -in the USB in smartphone and after show in the screen the “battery charging” you press “+ Volume and Power button” for 5 seconds… the smartphone will starts in Recovery mode.”

Found this case today:

I actually purchased a Garmin case from best buy for this. Fits perfectly!

One of my new favorite shows – Downton Abbey

Last year, I read a short blurb in Entertainment Weekly about a show on PBS called Downton Abbey(NOT downTOWN) that starred Maggie Smith from Harry Potter and Sister Act. I am a fan of hers, so I checked out the first episode and became hooked on it. Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t really like continuing TV shows, especially drama-ridden shows, but the sets, the costumes, the castle, all made this such a visual feast that I had to continue watching.

I took 2 days to sit through the first 2 seasons and was hungry for more.

If you haven’t heard about this, it’s set in the early 1900’s in the U.K., focusing on the servants of a wealthy family. There’s the backstabbing gay guy, the vicious and bitter maid, the nice manservant, the crazy cook and a large staff of extras. Then, when the focus goes “upstairs”, you have the wealthy family who have good intentions and the mother of the husband, who is played by Dame Maggie Smith. She is biting and sarcastic, but underneath, she shows she does have a heart.

Electronic Wind Chimes – A Second Chance At Life!

Well, Quirky didn’t choose my Electronic Wind Chimes to assist in production. I looked through the types of products they choose and noticed that most were plastic inexpensive items. So, onto the next phase. I have made a simple website to describe the Electronic Wind Chimes and hopefully pick up an investor or two. Check it out and if you have suggestions or comments, let me know!

Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares And The Backlash

I enjoy watching Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares because it shows how a restaurant should be run. There has been a lot of backlash on the number of the restaurants that have closed since he helped them, but the people who say these things don’t understand why. They seem to attribute it to Ramsay, but that’s not the case.

Usually, when people have called Gordon Ramsay to assist them, they have reached the bottom of the barrel or the end of their rope. Business owners wouldn’t call Gordon unless they have run out of money, ideas or both.

So, when Gordon gets there, the restaurant has already gotten a bad reputation or is poorly run. (or both) Just because he steps in the door, the crowds are going to come in just to see him and be a part of “his” restaurant for a portion of what it would cost to go to one of his own restaurants. Of course, that’s going to appear as if he has revived the restaurant. But the problem with poorly run operations is that it isn’t going to change in 3 days.

If the people are in horrendous debt, they will not be able to turn that around quickly enough to keep the place open. If they are poorly run, the owners think it’s someone’s fault other than their own.

I have owned businesses and I have shut them down. There was a statistic that said 90% of businesses fold within a year. You have to either have unlimited cash to keep a business open. Very few people have that. I actually ate at NYLA, owned by Britney Spears in the short time it was open in NYC. The decor on the table was a dollar store beaded lamp and the food was not worth the price. So, it wasn’t surprising when I heard it closed down. So, even Britney’s cash wasn’t enough to keep the doors open.

People who have never owned a business think it’s a party from the time you open the doors. You are married to the business. You have to live and breathe every second of the day. At least for the first year. The standard is that you have to have enough cash to keep the business open for a year without showing a profit-that no business shows profit the first year.

The reason people react so poorly on Ramsay’s show is that they have already burned out. The restaurant is on its last legs. No amount of work in 3 days will keep the business open. Most of the time, the people call him when they want out of the place, want to showcase it on TV and then sell it before it closes. This sort of backfires in the process because if you see how much attitude is in the background, it doesn’t make you want to patronize their restaurant.

One of the places actually closed the doors after Gordon’s visit and slammed him on their website, and then personally attacked him there as well. They don’t get that he didn’t just show up. THEY INVITED HIM TO HELP THEM. They know how he operates, they know his tactics, they know he’s going to yell, but in the end, he gets the job done! The underlying reason for the closing is that they wait until it’s too late to save the place. If they called when the tables just started to get empty, there might be a chance.

It was nice to see one restaurant that had a clean kitchen and cooler, but the only thing wrong was the owner’s attitude and food. He actually accosted a customer about whether the food was microwaved. (Which it was.) His attitude drove customers away. That’s not something Gordon is going to be able to change in 3 days.

Here’s a list that someone put together of the restaurants that have closed since the show aired:

Cracked – Rejected Album Covers – Best One!

Cracked did a list of the (fake) rejected album covers and out of them all, I found this one the funniest.

Here’s the video:

http://www.vevo.com/watch/olivia-newton-john/physical/USMCV0400009

Now, before you watch this, remember this was the early 80’s, when all gay men weren’t pumped up on steroids. And, there wasn’t the term “bear” for big hairy gay men. So it was actually ironic at the end of the video.

Here’s another video from the 70’s that shows gay men’s obsession with body type.

Village People – Macho Man
