When I lived in Jersey City, NJ, I was in an apartment building. Not long after I moved in, they did a test on the alarm system. I was walking through the apartment when the alarm went off, and there was a speaker for it in the foyer. The sound went through my body like an electric shock. My reaction was actually one of being electrocuted… My body shook and then there was a pause in the alarm. It went off again and I realized what was going on.
I can’t even begin to describe the sound. I ended up taping over the alarm to deaden the sound. It went off so much for no reason that I ignored it. If the building had burned, I would have been the last one to know.
